Dunlop started one day in 1888 when John Boyd Dunlop was watching his son ride his tricycle. Dunlop noticed how rough the ride was because the tires were treaded with metal. So Dunlop glued together the edges of two strips of rubber to make a tube, and then he inflated it with air from a soccer ball pump.
